Dr Delia Wallis CPsych
Dr. Wallis is a Toronto Psychologist, providing clinical psychology services in English and American Sign Language (ASL). Dr. Wallis is a registered psychologist with over 25 years of professional psychology experience and works with adults, teens and children.
Dr. Wallis began her psychology career at McGill University. While earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology she became intrigued by the relationships between language, psychology and human development. Upon completing her BA she pursued this interest through working as a Research Assistant and Lab Coordinator for a number of years at the Laboratory for Language, Sign and Cognitive Studies at McGill. Research in the lab included the study of natural language development among hearing families (English, French) and Deaf families (ASL, LSQ) and provided a glimpse into the importance of language and communication in all aspects of personal development and interpersonal relationships.
Then, through an International Student Scholarship, Dr. Wallis was provided a uniquely enriching opportunity to attend Gallaudet University, in Washington DC, where she earned a Master’s degree in Developmental Psychology and a Specialist degree in School Psychology. As one of a minority of hearing students at this bilingual (ASL, English) university for deaf students, Dr. Wallis was fortunate to meet with students and faculty from around the world; people with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and varied world views. This deeply enlightening experience continues to inform and inspire her daily work with all clients.
As part of her Specialist degree, Dr. Wallis completed a year-long internship at Summit School in Montreal. Upon completion of her internship, Dr. Wallis was recruited by Summit School to work full time as a psychologist and team leader. Summit School serves over 600 students with special needs by creating individualized services in an enriched environment. Dr. Wallis had the privilege to provide assessment and therapy services to students with an extremely wide range of strengths and needs.
In 1994, Dr. Wallis moved to Toronto and accepted a psychology position with the Canadian Hearing Society, providing psychological psychotherapy and assessment services to Deaf, oral deaf, deafened and hard of hearing youth and adults. In addition to providing direct client services, Dr. Wallis also held clinical supervisory, management and leadership positions, at both the local and provincial levels.
An avid lifelong learner, Dr. Wallis returned to school in 2001 to pursue a doctoral degree in psychology at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto (OISE/UT). As part of her doctoral training she received continuing training in various clinical settings (e.g., hospital, community, school and university settings).
After receiving her PhD, Dr. Wallis further completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Hincks-Dellcrest Centre (now known as the SickKids Centre for Community Mental Health) . A firm believer in continuing education, Dr. Wallis continues to pursue and engage in enriching professional and educational conferences and workshops and learning opportunities.
Dr. Wallis first opened her private practice in 2001 on a part-time basis and expanded to full-time private practice in 2007.
Dr. Wallis has also had the pleasure of teaching an advanced level assessment course to doctoral students in psychology at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education/ University of Toronto (OISE/UT), and supervising students at various stages of training.
